Canadianprotein.com Review

Canadian Protein is a canadian online bulk supplement store. It offers a wide selection of products without the associated brand name cost and also sells brand name products with lower than retail price.

Enough with trying to be the professional review, it's too much work for a dumbass like me. Let's get down to the real shit.
For the TL;DR crowd. To summarize it, excellent product but bad experience.

Now I have shopped at various supplement stores before, bodybuilding.com, trueprotein.com, sndcanada/supplementscanada/popeye's so I will be comparing those stores with Canadian Protein. First I will be comparing, selection/pricing and then sharing my own experiences with them.

Selection: The selection is good here. For the in-house protein, there are a bunch to choose from from the recession whey concentrate (24g of 30g) to a premium isolate (29g of 30g protein). The protein also doesn't just come in your standard fair of chocolate, vanilla and strawberry, they also have others. In terms of supplements, a lot of stuff is there. If I wasn't going to be cutting out a lot of supps, I'd have pretty much what I would want covered. Brand name products selection consist of the popular products or what's hot. Now compared to trueprotein, TP has a greater selection of supplements but serious that shit is for ppl that live off supps, good for ppl that need all that crap but I just want my basics. TP wins for protein hands down, that place is loaded with an epic amount of choices. One thing that stood out was that CP recently started carrying CLA, even TP don't have that.

Price: Brand name products pricing is way better than those of supplementscanada/snd. Comparing to TP though is kinda iffy, Some products are comparable and some are not. Example, I was looking at beta-alanine (yes, I know the shit don't work, I did not buy it) CP 1lb $19.41, TP 500g $20.50(USD), since exchange rate is pretty much at par, it's very competitive. Now BCAA powder CP 1lb $24.18, TP (for the instantized one) $13.99 (US)..<--WTF.

Now an argument will come up shipping will be expensive. Well that depends on what/how much you buy because it can work either way. This is a non-factor in pricing as the variable is what you want. Example, buy 5 lbs of bcaa powder, difference in price is $50, though shipping/duty/tax will be like 25$, so you save. Shipping massive amount of protein though different story.

Experience: I ordered samples October 2nd, it got sent out Oct 17. Cool, I thought I'd get it in a few days as Windsor to Toronto isn't far. I was wrong, 7 business days go by and it wasn't here. It this point I'm iritiated as hell because 3 and a half weeks have gone by, I ran out of protein and it was fucking with my diet. I say fuck it, and go ahead and put in an order anyways. This order was processed next business day and arrived the day after, the same day that samples come...(and the package as post-dated oct 17, this piss me off as well cuz I ordered something that shipped from British Columbia and it arrived in 8 days and it was standard post as well). Sidestory as well. The day I ordered the samples, I put in an order at trueprotein too, I wanted to order my protein there as well, but since I was cutting down on supps in the future I wanted to find a good source for bulk protein in Canada. Messed up thing? I got my trueprotein order even before the samples shipped.

Protein review: Premium Whey Blend
-Taste: I ordered strawberry, chocolate, chocolate peanut butter (I also have a sample of cookies and cream but I am saving it for a day when I need to have it on the go). I have tried all 3 of them. Chocolate taste like hot chocolate but obviously not hot. It's like u know how you buy the hot chocolate powder from the grocery store, just like how that is. It doesn't make you go wow, but it ain't gonna make you throw-up either, it's average, standard. Strawberry taste like any other strawberry shit out there, taste sweeter than the chocolate. If you've tried Y&Y strawberry roll cookies, they taste just like the cream in those, and I used to love eating those cookies. Choco PB, I've only had the sample I purchased but it taste similar to chocolate but a bit sweeter and some PB flavour. I'll update the taste of choco pb when I open the package.

-Mixibility: The protein mixes just as well as any premium branded protein in a shaker cup. Using a chopstick/spoon to stir mixes surprisingly good as well, just a few minor clumps <--Way better compared to Dymatize Elite Whey and this was my go to brand. The ability to stir with a spoon is a major plus for me as, I normally mix ground oatmeal into my drink and using the shaker, the oatmeal usually gets stuck in the lid between and grate or whatever it's called.

-Pricing: 5lbs was just a tad over $8/lb, 2lb was $9/lb. So pretty much $100 for 12lbs compared to 10lbs for the corporate giants. Good shit cuz I've upgraded to 2-3 servings a day. Obviously pricing is a reason why we'd be looking at this protein right? So saving is always good for a comparable product. There's always a 5% off coupon floating around too.

Bottomline: This is a tough one to rate. The samples took way too long to process and my shipping time was fucked up (yes, i know this is a canadapost issue) but nonetheless it took 1 full month for the samples to arrive. For a person, that's on the fence about switching to a "lesser brand", they'd be turned off by this. If I wasn't on a budget and didn't up my protein intake, I woulda just said fuck it, and got the Dymatize. When I did put in the order, received it and used the product, I was satisfied. Would I order again? Yes, but this is because I know what I'd be getting though it wouldn't be my first choice of place to order from.. Would I recommend it to others? Possibly , depending on the needs of the individual.

As always though, don't just rely on one person's opinions. Do your research and then make a decision. More reviews/testimonials can be found on canadabodybuilding.com (be aware that they are a sponsor of the site). But Dee, what are my other choices? There's whey-factory.com which is also a canadian bulk supplement site, I haven't purchased from them though some of them prices is crazy.

Update 06-22-12: When I wrote this review, I was a bit irritated as I had to wait longer than usual.  I was at a stage where I was infatuated with protein shakes, and getting protein protein protein.  Looking back, shit isn't that serious.  Canadianprotein.com is a good company to order from especially with the price of whey protein powder nowadays.

  1. Nice review, covered pretty much everything I needed to know.

I ordered my samples today. If all goes well I'm going to order a 5lb then if I like the flavor I'll go to 25lb on the next order.

  2. Customer service and shipping is unacceptable at CanadianProtein.com. I placed an order on April 5th and 38 days later still haven't received my order. Contacted them several times; they NEVER answer their phone and rarely answer posts. There is no phone number or email address to contact them. Finally today when I placed a comment on their Facebook page did they respond they will offer a credit tomorrow (we'll see if they do) and then deleted my posts on Facebook. Be aware of this company; their customer service and shipping is unacceptable.

  3. Hey DeeQ, I believe with Canadian Protein.com samples are sent using regular mail. I've ordered a lot of samples to try their different types of protein and it comes via regular mail without tracking. They do this in order to offer samples for only a few bucks for customers to try.

I've ordered about 7 times from them and the quality, shipping, and experience is nothing short of AWESOME!

Lifetime customer right here is all I can say!

    1. Do they also use regular mail for non-sample orders?

  4. Their customer service hasn't really improved. I sent them an email inquiring about a certain product and haven't heard back from them...that was about a month ago.
